What it is used for

Composition

Clostridium botulinum toxin type A, 200 units per vial, stabilised with human serum albumin and sodium chloride. It works by blocking acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular junction, producing temporary and reversible relaxation of the treated muscle.

If albumin content is a concern for your patient population, Innotox is stabilised with L-methionine and polysorbate 20 instead and needs no reconstitution.

Handling

Inspect the vial before use - the cake should be white to slightly off-white and the seal intact. Reconstitute with sterile 0.9% sodium chloride, introducing the diluent gently rather than shaking; the toxin is a protein and rough handling degrades it. Use the volumes and per-site dosing given in Hugel's prescribing information.

Reconstituted solution should be used promptly and refrigerated in the meantime. Effect duration is typically three to four months, varying with dose, treated area, muscle bulk and how quickly the individual metabolises the toxin.

This is a prescription product for trained, licensed practitioners only. It is contraindicated in pregnancy and breastfeeding, in known hypersensitivity to any component, where infection is present at the injection site, and in neuromuscular disorders such as myasthenia gravis.
