Botulax 100U
Botulax is Hugel's botulinum toxin type A, and it is the product that put Korean toxin on the map internationally. The 100-unit vial is the workhorse presentation - large enough for a full-face session, small enough that a quieter week does not mean pouring product down the sink.
It arrives as a lyophilised powder, which is the conventional format for botulinum toxin and the reason it travels well. Freeze-dried toxin is more forgiving of the small temperature excursions that happen in international freight than a liquid preparation is, and the vial has a long shelf life sitting in the fridge. The trade-off is the reconstitution step: the powder has to be brought into solution with sterile saline before use, and the volume you choose determines the concentration you end up with.
That step is worth taking seriously, because it is where dosing inconsistency enters a clinic. Standardise the diluent volume across your practice and Botulax behaves predictably. Let each practitioner do it their own way and the same box produces different results in different rooms.
Why practitioners choose Botulax 100U
A long track record
Hugel has been exporting Botulax for over a decade and it is used in dozens of markets. For a clinic building a treatment menu around a single toxin, that history matters more than any individual specification.
Predictable onset
Most patients see movement reduction from around day two, with the effect settling over the following week to two weeks.
Contained diffusion
The complexed toxin has a high molecular weight, which is associated with limited spread beyond the injection point - useful anywhere precision matters more than coverage.
Cost per unit
Botulax is priced to be used, not saved for special occasions. For clinics running high volumes of glabellar and masseter work, it is one of the more economical type A toxins available from Korea.
What it is used for
Aesthetically, Botulax is used across the usual upper-face territory - glabellar lines, horizontal forehead lines and lateral canthal lines - as well as masseter reduction for lower-face contouring, perioral lines, platysmal bands and the horizontal neck lines sometimes called Venus rings.
Therapeutic uses include blepharospasm, bruxism, upper-limb spasticity and hyperhidrosis. Approved indications vary by market, and treatment should stay within your own scope of practice.
Composition
The active ingredient is Clostridium botulinum toxin type A at 100 units per vial. It blocks acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular junction, temporarily and reversibly relaxing the injected muscle.
- Human serum albumin, 0.5 mg - stabilises the toxin protein through freeze-drying and storage
- Sodium chloride, 0.9 mg - brings the reconstituted solution to physiological tonicity
Practitioners whose patients specifically ask about human- or animal-derived components usually move to Innotox 100U, which is stabilised with L-methionine and polysorbate 20 instead.
Botulax 100U specifications
| Product name | Botulax 100U |
|---|---|
| Manufacturer | Hugel Inc. |
| Country of origin | South Korea |
| Content | 100 units per vial |
| Format | Lyophilised powder, 1 vial per box |
| Preparation | Reconstitution with sterile 0.9% sodium chloride required |
| Shipping weight | 30 g |
| Storage | 2-8 °C, sealed and protected from light |
| Shelf life | 36 months from manufacture |
Handling
Before reconstitution the cake should look white to slightly off-white and the vacuum seal should be intact. Reconstitute with sterile 0.9% sodium chloride, adding the diluent gently down the side of the vial - botulinum toxin is a protein and vigorous shaking denatures it. Follow the volumes and per-site dosing in Hugel's prescribing information rather than improvising, and record the diluent volume your clinic standardises on so results stay comparable between practitioners.
Once reconstituted the solution should be used promptly and kept refrigerated in the interim. Duration of effect for most patients runs to around three to four months, varying with dose, treated area, muscle bulk and individual metabolism.
Botulinum toxin is a prescription product for administration by trained, licensed practitioners only. It is contraindicated in pregnancy and breastfeeding, in known hypersensitivity to any component, where infection is present at the intended injection site, and in neuromuscular disorders such as myasthenia gravis.
Powder or liquid?
| Botulax 100U | Innotox 100U | |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Lyophilised powder | Ready-to-use liquid |
| Reconstitution | Required before every use | Not required |
| Concentration | Set by your diluent volume | Fixed at 4 U / 0.1 ml |
| Stabiliser | Human serum albumin | L-methionine, polysorbate 20 |
| Prep time | A few minutes per vial | Seconds |
Neither is better in the abstract. Powder gives you control over concentration and travels robustly; liquid removes a step and takes operator variation out of the equation.
Storage and shipping
Botulax ships from Seoul in insulated cold-chain packaging with coolant and stays between 2 and 8 °C in transit. Refrigerate on arrival and keep vials sealed until use. Do not freeze.
